Skylight dome heavily colonised by lichen and moss before cleaning

Our skylight cleaning covers skylight domes, roof windows, conservatory roofs and glass gables, including the lichen and moss that builds up around the frame. If a room has gone dim and the skylight is green or grey around the edge, a clean brings the light back. Whether we can reach yours depends on the roof, so we check before you commit.

Skylights are easy to forget. You look up through them, not across, so they dim slowly and nobody notices the change until they are clean.

Why skylights get worse than windows

A wall window sheds water. A skylight dome sits flat or nearly flat, so rain pools around the frame instead of running off, and whatever was in that water stays behind when it dries.

A skylight also gets no wind-driven rain across its face the way a wall window does, so grime sits and builds.

Lichen and moss

That green and grey crust around the edge of a dome is lichen, and it starts where the water sits.

From the frame it creeps inwards across the surface. Caught early, it lifts off with a brush. Left for several years, it bonds to the acrylic or the glass, and removing it becomes slow, careful work.

It also holds moisture against the seal, so it is a maintenance problem as well as a light problem.

Glass, acrylic and the difference it makes

Most older domes are acrylic. Newer roof windows are usually glass.

It matters because acrylic hazes with age and sun, and that haze is in the plastic, not on it. Cleaning removes everything sitting on the surface and the room gets brighter. It cannot undo sun damage to the plastic itself.

If your dome is hazed rather than dirty, we will tell you, and you can decide whether replacing it is worth it.

Conservatories, gables and glazed pergolas

Sloped conservatory roofs, glass gables above a living room and glazed pergola panels are all angled glass that cannot be reached from inside and never gets rinsed properly from outside.

Getting to yours

Every roof is different, so we do not promise access before we know your roof. Some skylights can be reached from the ground or from inside. Those that need roof access are quoted case by case, and some we decline because the pitch or position is not safe. We will tell you which one you have before you commit to anything.

Call 0450 246 246, or request a callback and we will ring you.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reach my skylight?

It depends on the roof. Some skylights can be reached from the ground or from inside. Skylights that need roof access are quoted case by case, and some we decline. We will tell you which yours is before you commit to anything.

What is the green and grey stuff growing on it?

Lichen and moss. Skylight domes sit flat or nearly flat, so water pools around the frame instead of running off, and that is where lichen takes hold. It then creeps inwards across the dome. Caught early, it lifts off. Left for years, it bonds to the surface and takes far longer.

Why has my skylight gone dull rather than dirty?

Older domes are acrylic, not glass, and acrylic hazes with age and sun. Cleaning takes off whatever is sitting on top, and the room gets brighter. It will not reverse hazing in the plastic itself, and we will tell you which one you are looking at.

Do you clean conservatory and pergola glass?

Yes. Sloped conservatory roofs, glass gables and glazed pergola panels are the same job: angled glass that never gets rinsed properly and cannot be reached from inside.

How often do skylights need doing?

Once a year suits most homes, and sooner if you are under trees. Because you look up through a skylight rather than across it, the light loss builds slowly, and most people only notice after it has been cleaned.

James and team did a great job cleaning our external windows recently, including windows up high. James was very pleasant to deal with and was happy to touch up a few more spots after I mentioned. Thanks James.

James, Isaac and Zac just completed cleaning the exterior of all our windows to a very high standard. Our Edwardian home presented a range of height and access challenges which they tackled efficiently and professionally. They were punctual and very respectful as they worked diligently attending to every detail of the windows’ exterior. We would not hesitate to highly recommend them for your professional cleaning requirements. Thanks again James, Zac and Isaac.

You don’t realise how dirty your windows are until someone as skilled as James and his team comes and cleans them! Always very impressed with his work, would really recommend! even if you are someone who has never paid attention to getting your windows cleaned, I promise you will see the value in it after James comes and works his magic!
